Well, my father wasn’t in the army, so it was going to have to be the political appointment route. My family knew no one, which was a bit depressing.

When we arrived, we moved in with her parents in a little rental house on West Thirteenth Street. Mom had kept her old resourcefulness. She lied a little about her age to get the job, telling them she was just forty, and they paid her about twenty-five dollars a week.

And in 1958 that was a very significant distinction, because in late August of that year, the Little Rock School Board voted to simply close the city’s two High Schools—the famous Central High and the brand new Hall High, located on the western edge of town—rather than submit to mandatory school desegregation. Over two thousand high-school students were displaced by the decision, unable to attend classes. In the 9th grade at Pulaski Heights Junior High School, my friends and I were totally unaffected.
