On further discussion he disclosed that he had found Mrs Gould suspicious of the hospital social worker. The education welfare officer thought he had a better relationship with Mrs Gould and had more to offer her, but then he became worried when she began to think that he found her attractive. In the continuing discussion it became evident that he had thought Mrs Gould overcritical of the school but that he had fallen in with her mistrust of the hospital social worker. He began to express doubts about psychiatry in general, the methods of the department of child psychiatry and the social worker in particular.

The latter said that she had arranged for Mrs Hill to join a mother-and-toddlers’group but did not yet know how this had worked out; she was glad for the social worker to be involved as she felt the mother was depressed and needed more skilled counselling than she herself could offer. The two workers knew each other well, and they agreed that the GP’s referral provided a reason for the social worker to visit. Such an introduction of a new worker, particularly where skills overlap, can easily lead to confusion, rivalry and bad feeling.
