Page ix FOREWORD By Neale Donald Walsch By now, few people can seriously doubt that we are moving through one of the most crucial and important periods in human history. The past twenty-five years have placed sufficient evidence before all of us. Political upheavals alone have overthrown (and that is an apt word) our longest-lived conventions and constructions. Add the social, economic, scientific, educational, and spiritual reorderings we are witnessing and we have the recipe for much larger revolutions.

That story was the Gospels, which told of one man whose life and promise changed the world. We may never know the accurate history of Jesus' life, but we do know that the story created an expectation in the human heart that brought forth a new culture, one in which the individual is sacred, the kingdom of heaven is within us, and eternal life is promised through love of God and one another. Christendom was born, and in a variety of forms it dominated the Western world for more than a thousand years.

Faced with this threat, life might have attempted to adapt to limitations, but instead it innovated and transformed. The problem then became an evolutionary driver. Multicellular Life Oxygen appeared, a poison to anaerobic cells. In an extraordinarily complex process, a new form of organism evolved: multicellular life that could metabolize oxygen. With multicellular life a jump in consciousness occurred: animal, or present-oriented consciousness, emerged in the world of single cells. Evolutionary innovations of great significance appeared, such as sexual reproduction.
