For these Bolivians, as well as for many other people in Latin America, health requires a balance of the hot, cold, wet, and dry in the body, with disease resulting from an imbalance of these qualities, which need to be equilibrated (Foster 1978, 1987). Less obvious are differences in values, such as treatment in the home with the family present rather than alone in the clinic, delivery of babies by midwives, and the refusal of womenout of modestyto be examined by male doctors. Doctors in developing countries have little success convincing people who are not educated in the ways of science about the causal relationships between illnesses and medically maladaptive behavior, especially when these individuals are routinized in another medical tradition and lack healthy alternatives.
