That is certainly unlikely— especially if teachers and principals wish to hold onto their jobs! My hope is that teachers or educational leaders will be able to see ways and opportunities in which some of the concerns, foci, and questions raised in this book might be adapted to the ongoing curriculum— both explicit and informal—of their school and classrooms. A final note. This book was written in the hope and belief that human beings might treat one another with greater care, compassion, and respect, and the belief that education might contribute to a change in human attitudes and behavior.

It offers little to the process of grasping how others who share our world might have very different ways of seeing and understanding things, or recognizing that far from there being a single true reality that we all agree on, human beings quite often arrive at very different takes on who we are, what our purpose in life is, the origins of existence, and so on. All of this requires that we teach in ways that dismantle, rather than reinforce, the idea that a single unalterable truth exists regarding just about anything we can point to in the living world.

It is an awful responsibility which has come to us. We thank God that the atomic bomb has come to us instead of to our enemies, and we pray that God may guide us to use it in his ways and for his purposes. Sadly, the language of our politics and national debate is still saturated with images of demonic forces, “axes of evil,” that must be overcome by the forces of righteousness. Whether it is “godless communism” or fanatical Islam, the same impulses are nurtured and stirred. The world is divided in absolute and categorical ways between good and evil, right and wrong—those of us who claim to represent wisdom and those who are regarded as malevolent.
